Mercy of a devotee...

Verse 1.15.8 (Mohan Prji):

* This is a nice chapter where Arjuna is expressing his gratitude to Krishna.
* Arjuna was grief-stricken and overwhelmed and is now thinking of the so many ways how Krishna was always giving them all strength.
* He is saying that whatever amazing things he did, he did only because Krishna had empowered him to do so.
* SP is giving a amazing purport to this verse. He is talking about how the demons have amazing powers. However all such power should be utilized in service of the Lord.
* SP: Those who worship Vishnu is a devotee, those who do not worship Vishnu is a demon. Anybody not worshiping Vishnu, but worships demigods, is also demon.
* Eg: Hiranyakashipu or Ravana, they are demons, cause they were not worshiping or favorable to Vishnu.
* The demons possess wonderful and supernatural powers to create material wonders. But they are always disturbing elements of the society. The modern demons are the harmful material scientists who create some material wonders for disturbance in the society. For example, the creation of nuclear weapons has caused some panic in human society.
* For the common man, when they see that scientists perform such wonders, it is making the common ppl lose their belief in God. The consciousness of the general mass of ppl has changed a lot.
* Further in the purport, the solution is given. It is the devotee of Lord. Here, Maya dhanava could not save himself from the forest fire. He therefore took the shelter of Arjuna, a devotee.
* So SP is saying, taking shelter of the devotee is the best way out for all of us, in the conditioned state of the fire of material existence.
* Devotees are therefore more merciful than the Lord, and in devotional service the mercy of a devotee is more valuable than the mercy of the Lord.
* The process is that by the grace of the devotee the mercy of the Lord is obtained, and by the mercy of the Lord a chance to serve the Lord's devotee is obtained.
* It is a cyclic process. Then where is the starting point. By praying to the Supreme Lord for showing us a bona fide spiritual master, Krishna will surely guide us to a starting point.
* Eg: Srila Prabhupada (SP), who wrote all Vedic scriptures in English, because of which we are today getting a chance to read Srimad Bhagavatam.

Faith in the Holy Name!

Verse 1.15.7 (Shalini Mji):

* A small story here about how Arjuna was married to Draupadi.
* King Drupada wanted his daughter's hand to be given only to Arjuna.
* In this verse, Arjuna was remembering the power given to him by Krishna, is winning the hand of Draupadi.
* He is feeling that extreme lamentation in the absence of the Supreme Lord.
* Krishna has told in BG, that He is the intelligent seed, He is the most powerful of all powerful men. This shows that whatever infinitesimal power we might have in our DS or any activity, is actually coming from the Supreme powerful, Krishna.
* We can also know that in this kaliyuga, Krishna has put all power in the Holy Name. The problem is that I do not have that faith in the power.
* Couple of beautiful verses, where it is told how powerful Krishna's holy name is:
- Vishnu sahasranam = sri rama rameti....
- the technical aspect, 1 name of Krishna = 3000 names of Lord Vishnu
* Even after hearing so much on chanting, doing chanting on the daily basis, but still is there faith that Krishna has invested all the power in the holy name.
* Definitely SP has so much mercy on all us, that with day to day practice, one day will surely come when we will have that faith that Krishna is Himself the Holy name.

Holy Name is the means and the end too!

Verse 1.15.6 (Saci Suta Prji)

* Here in today's world, Arjuna is saying that separation from the Lord would render all the universes unfavorable and void, like bodies without life.
* Similar to this, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu tells in Siksastakam, yugayitam nimishena...12 years or more.
* He also says in the last verse: I know only Krishna as my Lord...unconditionally.
* It is the living entity's constitutional position to be an eternal servant of the Lord.
* ...
* Above all living entities, there is one Supreme Soul, who resides in everyone's heart as Paramatma.
* The Lord has many agents to vanquish the demons. But the Lord personally comes just to please His devotees.
* Essence: Krishna is the SPG. We are His eternal servants. In this age of Kali, He has come in the form of the Holy Name.
* 5 things to do in this devotional service to the holy name
- associating with devotees, deity worship, reading bhagavatam, ..
* When we chant and try to purify our hearts, first thing that will come out are our anarthas. But we should not get bewildered by them, we should continue to chant. That way, purification will come in.

Relationship with Vaisnavas...

Verse 1.15.2-4 (Kavitha Mataji):

* Arjuna is friendship relationship with Krishna, devotee in sakhya rasa. Their friendship is eternal.
* It is so much close that Arjuna is used to seeing Krishna as a friend, that he does not like to see the Universal form of Krishna, which Krishna showed to him in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
* He was not only a well-wisher of Arjuna but actually a benefactor, and to make it still more perfect the Lord tied him into a family relationship by arranging Subhadra's marriage with him. And above all, the Lord agreed to become a chariot driver of Arjuna in order to protect His friend from warfare risks,
and the Lord became actually happy when He established the Pandavas to rule over the world.
* Actually, we also have such relationship with Krishna, but we have forgotten that relationship.
* Develop good relationships with Vaisnavas, if we want to develop good relationships with Krishna.

Arjuna's relationship with Krishna!

Verse 1.14.44 (Pooja Mataji):

* We have seen that Maharaj Yudhistira (MY) notices the changes in seasonal things, bad omens etc. He also then notices the dejection on Arjuna's face.
* So he inquires from Arjuna about all possible questions on why he may be dejected. Then finally, he is now confronting Arjuna with the essential question of whether Lord Krishna, his friend, has already disappeared from the vision of the world.
* Because Arjuna is such a close friend of Krishna, MY is inquiring these from him.
* BG 10.1: Lord Krishna establishes this relation between Him and Arjuna - friendship.
* BG 18.64: Krishna is saying "my very dear friend"
* BG 18.65: "Always think of Me, become my devotee..... you are my very dear friend"
* Although BG was speaking to Arjuna, it was actually spoken for the whole world.
* SP comments: concentration of mind on Krishna is the essence behind reading the BG.

Food distribution pleases Krishna!

Verse 1.14.43 ( Prji):

* Maharaj Yudhistira was very much afraid of the departure of Lord Krishna.
* Arjuna returned after 7 months from Dvaraka, and appeared very low and dejected.
* Maharaj Yudhistira, was therefore quereing Arjuna as to why he appeared so lack lustre. In this verse, he was checking if he did not take care of children or older people.
* We must respect the elders in all possible ways and must take care of them.
* On the flip side, in Kaliyuga, there are some old people who might be too conditioned or not believe in KC in any way. So we need to be careful in such cases.

* Children, old members, the invalids and brahmanas must be taken care of by householders.
* In olden days, at least they feed one person who is hungry and then dine after that. Through this, happiness automatically comes.
* Basically, grhastha means charity. The best charity is Krishna Consciousness. One means is prasadam distribution.
* Srila Prabhupada, once saw some children fighting with dogs for food, so he ordered that within 10 kms radius of the temple, no one should go hungry. That's how Food for life program came through.
* And it is so famous all over the world now. So many temples have started this and giving food to so many people.
* We should also develop a desire to start a temple and feed many people. Krishna will provide for everything and we will of course be making Krishna very very happy.
* We should pray for everybody: sarvejana sukino bavante!

Being an instrument for Krishna...

Verse 1.14.42 (Deepthi Mataji):

* Vedic system's caste principles are being explained here.
* In Kali yuga, of course, all people belong to the sudra class.
* SP is also commenting on how women should be respected.
* SP also gave us the 4 regulative principles that will help us elevate ourselves to the Vaisnava platform.
* Arjuna being defeated by Bhismadeva was understandable, cause he was superior than Arjuna in many ways. But how to understand that finally Bhismadeva was defeated by Arjuna?
- He wanted to be an instrument in Krishna's hands, that however strong one may be, if there are not in the Lord's side, they are sure to be defeated.
- We can understand the mood of devotees by reading the purports of the acharyas.
- so here Bhismadeva was not on the side of Krishna, but still he was on the side of Krishna, cause he was acting in accordance with the will of Krishna!

Enlightenment for the leaders!

Verse 1.14.41 (Krishna Patro Prji):

* Yudhistira Maharaj was full of anxiety as Arjuna had not returned for such a long time.
* At this time, he could see all the inauspicious signs of kali. And he was remembering Naradamuni's statement about the Lord's departure.
* As soon as Arjuna returned, MY was anxious because he could not think about the Lord leaving them.
* He did not directly ask whether the Lord left this world, but was indirectly finding if everyone surrounding the Lord were fine, cause that is the nature of a devotee.
* Pain of separation from the Lord is very painful. So here, Arjuna and Yudhistira Maharaj, were feeling deep separation from the Lord.
* He was trying to give reasons as to why Arjuna was in tears. And this verse is one such reason - You are always the protector of the deserving living beings, such as brahmanas, children, cows, women and the diseased. Could you not give them protection when they approached you for shelter?
* Leaders should understand that the protection of these living entities is a must.
* In previous times, the kings were ready to give up their lives to protect these citizens. But as kali progressed, now we can see how leaders are trying to protect their own lives, at the cost of the lives of the citizens.
* Even though it is small statement, it is an enlightenment for the leaders of the state as to what they should be doing.
* One cannot change the affects of Kali, this SB although gives the method to overcome it, that is Devotional Service.

Verse 1.14.39 (Ramana Prji):

* Real surrender
* Perfection of real renunciation is surrender.
* Leads us to sarnagati. 6 ways
- humility
- dedicate oneself,
- faith that Krishna will protect me
- doing those things which are favorable
- ...
- ...
* In our parampara, it is all so much suffering to all our acharya's, similar situations as the

Pandavas, and all placed immense faith in Krishna
- they did it cause not just they are pure devotees, they actually defined a pure devotee
* So we have to take shelter of such pure devotees
* We are struggling to understand dharma, how can we then understand KRishna by our own.
* So the best way is cry out for the holy name, chanting should be with increasing surrender
* 6 qualities that we can meditate to improve chanting,
- controlling the mind (by looking at the names)
- cleanliness, external and internal
- silence, only to talk about Krishna and nothing else
- meditate on the meanings of the holy name, means set the mood, the night mood before u go to mood
- patience, should not be in the mood of get it done.
- steadfastness or persistence, continue serving the holy names with faith
* Seek the shelter or ashray of the Panchatattva, before chanting.

Wakeful State...

Verse 1.14.38 (Uma Mataji):

* The great heroes of the Yadu dynasty, being protected by the arms of Lord Sri Krishna, always remain fearless in every respect. And therefore their feet trample over the Sudharmā assembly house, which the best demigods deserved but which was taken away from them.
* Lord Krishna was provided with all kinds of comforts and facilities available within the universe by the members of the Yadu dynasty, and in return such servitors of the Lord were protected and fearless.
* So many examples of how the Lord protects His devotees
- Ambarisha Maharaj and Durvasa Muni pastime
* If we desire the Lord, He will fulfill all our wishes accordingly, since He is residing in our heart.
* If we completely surrender to the Lord, then we become a like a lotus leaf in water, no material
distress will affect us.
* But we are so busy chasing after temporary pleasures, we don't have time for devotional service. SP is commenting on this: A person may be fearful of a tiger in a dream, but another man who is awake by his side sees no tiger there. The tiger is a myth for both of them, namely the person dreaming and the person awake, because actually there is no tiger; but the man forgetful of his awakened life is fearful, whereas the man who has not forgotten his position is not at all fearful.

Satyabhama...

Verse 1.14.37 (Yugal Kishore Prji):

* Here Vyasadeva, is explaining about Satyabhama, the wife of Lord Krishna.
* In Caitanya lia, it is Jaganand Pandit actually.
* Here, we see how Krishna was acting even as a hen-pecked husband, just for the pleasure of his surrendered wives.
* SP is commenting on how Krishna was playing the part of the complete husband.
- He even fought with the demigods to get the parijata flower and hence please his wife.
* Even Krishna asks Satyabhama to enquire from Draupadi as to how to please the husband.
* When Krishna left the planet, feeling his separation, Satyabhama underwent severe penance in the last part of her life.
* Srila Prabhupada is telling, when the SPG is their husband, the wives of Lord Krishna had everything.
- Lakshmi also wanted Narayana as her husband, not that Narayana wanted Lakshmidevi.
- Even all the wives of Lord Krishna, all had everything in him.
* Krishna is unlimited, so his love for every jiva is also unlimited, He will do anything for his devotees.
* Gopi's are the topmost in expressing their love for Krishna!

The Yadu Dynasty!

Verse 1.14.35-36 (Srinivas Acharya Prji):

* Here, in this verse Maharaj Yudhistira is telling the glories of the Yadu dynasty, under the protection of the Lord Himself.
* 4 types of problems in this material world: janma, mrtyu, jara, and vyadhi. Vyadhi is something we all might be currently dealing with.
* We have to come to a realization that the Supreme Lord Krishna is the ultimate enjoyer of all the sacrifices.
* In each and every universe, the Personality of VVishnu resides as two capacities: the Personality of Godhead Visnu resides within each and every universe in two capacities, namely as the Garbhodakasayi Visnu and the Ksirodakasayi Visnu. The Ksirodakasayi Visnu has His own planet on the northern top of the universe, and there is a great ocean of milk where the Lord resides on the bed of the Ananta incarnation of Baladeva.
* SP: the smallest planet in the spiritual world is much much bigger than the biggest universe in the material world. Our universe is the smallest universe in the material world.
* Beyond the material sky, further than we can see with our eyes and beyond the sevenfold coverings of the universe, there is the Causal Ocean in which all the universes are floating like footballs, and beyond the Causal Ocean there is an unlimited span of spiritual sky generally known as the effulgence of Brahman.Beyond the material sky, further than we can see with our eyes and beyond the sevenfold coverings of the universe, there is the Causal Ocean in which all the universes are floating like footballs, and beyond the Causal Ocean there is an unlimited span of spiritual sky generally known as the effulgence of Brahman.
* MY is comparing the yadus with Maha-paurusikas, who are vaikuntaloka-vasi's and who are always happy.
* Chanting the glories to the Lord is the process in this kaliyuga. Then we attract the mercy of Krishna.
* Members of the Yadu dynasty are devotees of the Lord!

Protector of Cows, Govinda, Bhagavan...

Verse 1.14.34 (Saci Suta Prji):

* Here in this particular verse the Lord is described as bhagavān, govinda, brahmanya and bhakta-vatsala. He is bhagavan svayam, or the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, full with all opulences, all power, all knowledge, all beauty, all fame and all renunciation. No one is equal to or greater than Him. He is Govinda because He is the pleasure of the cows and the senses. Those who have purified their senses by the devotional service of the Lord can render unto Him real service and thereby derive transcendental pleasure out of such purified senses.
* From Vishnu-purana, we hear this: namo brahmanya govindaya....
- also from BS, we hear this: chintamani ....tamaham bhajami
* Only those who have purified themselves by devotional service, can render transcendental service unto Him.
* Society devoid on cow protection and brahminical culture is not under the protection of the Lord.
* Devotee = mercy of Krishna + brhaminical qualities
* In BG 12, Krishna is telling the different ways one can always be thinking of Him.
* The Lord is present where pious men reside. So association of devotees is very important.

Protection of the Lord!

Verse 1.14.32-33 (Srinivas Acharya Prji):

* The constant companions of Lord Krsna, such as Uddhava, are all liberated souls, and they descended along with Lord Krsna to this material world to fulfill the mission of the Lord.
* All these devotees are always under the supreme protection and internal energy of the Lord.
* Eg: Pandavas, are eternally liberated souls. Arjuna's war with the Kurus at the end of their incognito time, is an example too.
- Same Arjuna, in Kurukshetra, the Lord withdraws the protection for a moment, then gives the BG.
* So when the soul looks to see to itself, then Krishna puts the soul into a material body for us to enjoy. But there is suffering only here.
* And Krishna comes to this material world again and again to attract these conditioned souls. Because He wants us to come to back to Him.
* And those who have taken DS as their means for purification, they are always protected by the Lord.
- so the dependence of the jiva on the Supreme Lord is always the best
* Another pt: difference between jiva tattva and vishnu tattva
- vishnu tattva remembers all, while jiva tattva often forget their causes and reactions
* Those who give up this protection of the Lord, will come back to this material world, even after prolonged tapasya of the severest type.
* The only way is: by chanting the holy name, serving devotees and being in KC.

Lord's transcendental activities!

Verse 1.14.31 (BalaGovind Prji):

* Here Yudhistira Maharaj is inquiring about the chieftains in Vrsni dynasty.
* SP is mentioning about Krishna's transcendental position as God.
- He maintained almost 1610800 family members. not common at all for any human being
- He expanded 16108 times for each wife
- Krishna's birth and activities are all transcendental. Knowing them in reality, we will understand the position of Krishna in reality. Unless we do it, we cannot surrender. EG: policeman with gun in hand, anyone will surrender, cause power is there in his hand.
- All the activities that Krishna did from childhood, very difficult for any conditioned soul to see.
* SP mentions in BS's explanation: premanjana churitha bhakti vilochanena...
* ...
* Whoever continuously chants and hears your transcendental activities, will get to see your lotus feet, and hence will not need to come back to this conditioned world again.
- hear, sing, chant, remember about Krishna's glories, taking pleasure in others doing so (this is very difficult, some others involved, cause we have anarthas like enviousness) is also very important
- we have to take the medicine of KC through the process of chanting and hearing, then one day we will surely get rid of our anarthas.
- it will make our life perfect, which is the solution of all problems.

Lord Nityananda!

Verse 1.14.25-29 (Srinivas Pendyala Prji):

* Now that Arjuna has returned, Maharaj Yudhistira is enquiring from him about Sri Krishna and all persons close to Sri Krishna.
* One thing comes out
- He is asking about all the relatives around Krishna and then coming to Krishna
- the proper protocol to approach the Lord is first through Guru, the devotees and then the Lord.
* SP is also commenting that
- Lord Balarama has been addresses as the SPG. It is very significant.
- Although the Supreme Lord is one without a second, He expands himself as many living beings.
- Vishnu tattva is quantitatively and qualitatively equal to the Lord. Yet Lord Krsna is one without a second
- This can be understood by Lord Sri CM's acintya bedabeda tattva. Also substantiated through the Brahma samhita's candle analogy
* One who considers the jiva tattva equal to Vishnu tattva is considered to be a condemned soul of the world.
- From the 10 offenses to the holy name, one should not equate even the demigods to the Supreme Lord.
* Lord Balaram is the protector of all the devotees.
- He is the Spiritual Master to the entire world!
- He came as Lord Nityananda in Gaura lila, is more merciful than Lord Balaram. Proof is the delivarance of Jagai and Madhai. He is parama karuna, actually the two Lords are Supreme most merciful.
* The lotus feet of the spiritual master is the only protection that we have in this conditioned existence. We should sincerely take the shelter of the SM
- by following the instructions of the SM
- then mercy comes through the medium of following the instructions
- It is the direct protection of the SM, other words, the direction protection of Lord Nityananda Prabhu!

Spiritual Relationship is eternal!

Verse 1.14.23-24 (Yugal Kishore Prji):

* Arjuna is returning in 7 months, so long. And Maharaj Yudhistira was seeing all inauspicious moments everywhere.
* Arjuna means dhira, sober, warrior, ksatriya. But that person, how was he looking like now? The head was down, tears were cascading from his eyes, he was down.
* Arjuna is a nithyasiddha devotee of the Lord, but for material souls something like this happens, who are lost in material conditioning.
* Story: Prabhuji in Erie, PA. Nice program, everyone happy, prasadam over. Suddenly phone call came, giving news that the host's grandmother passed away.
- She was too attached to her grandmother, when that attachment was broken, so much misery comes from the death
- The pain is because the relationship was created on the level on the mind! Realized: relationships in the material world are temporary.
- But what if Krishna is in the center, then there will be sorrow, but on the spiritual level. And that will enhance the relationship. Eternal relationship.
- Eg: SP's disciples, never forget SP. Similarly for us, eternal relationship ==> we will keep them in the heart always, never forget.
- Another eg: Arjuna cried for Abhimanyu, not just for his son, but because he was an associate in service to Krishna!
* Spiritual relationships, so very good. Chastity, is not just for ladies, gents too!
* Krishna gave everything to Arjuna. That dearest person had not departed.
* Bhishmadeva's instruction to MY: you will also give the same pain to others, when you depart.

Bad omens everywhere...

Verse 1.14.12-22 (Surekha Mji):

* The bad omens indicating the disappearance of Lord Krsna is being described here. It is very undesirable to see them.
* The relationship that Maharaj Yudhistira, Bhimasena and Arjuna had was very close
- how much close are we to Krishna, especially think about this while chanting or before chanting
* We should ponder on this relationship with Krishna and put that effort to reestablish our relationship with Krishna.

* Our preaching is also for our own purification.
* Eg: For getting initiated also, it is a purification.

The missing link...

Verse 1.14.11 (Krishna Patro Prji):

* Here we are continuing to look into the symptoms of Kali
- we are experiencing it practically everyday
* In summer, we get cold, in Winter, we get hot. Seasonal changes is happening
* For livelihood, we are ready to do anything.
* In this age, we are so accustomed to greed, anger and pride.
* So, Yudhistira Maharaj could experience all these things from the symptoms of his bodily parts quivering again and again.
* Everything happens by the Supreme will of the Lord. In spite of so many bad things in kali, there is one good method, of getting back our relationship with Krishna, Godhead.
* Therefore, the "missing link" for the root cause of all symptoms of kali, is our disconnection to the SPG!
* Until and unless we realize this place to be a place of misery, we will not take up with process of DS.
* Only solution is to have constant touch with the SPG, without being disturbed.
* Sri CM: Where Krishna is present, it is all sun. There is no place for maya or darkness, that is kali.
* Those who are asuras, who do not believe in the SPG, will continue to make their plans to counteract these miseries. But it will always result in a failure.
* The only solution, as SP comments: is like a cloud stopping the forest fire, the cloud sent by Krishna
is His bona fide representatives.
- Everyday we sing: samsara davanalalidha loka tranaya karunya ghana ghanatvam!
* So we need to take shelter of acharyas, then we need to give to others this Krishna Consciousness.

Everything is mercy of the Lord!

Canto 1.14.9 (Ramana Prji)

* Learn to attribute our success to the Lord, then we can loose the propensity to enjoy the results!
* Yudhistira Maharaja is also saying that whatever they got is all because of the mercy of Lord Krishna
- so whatever we achieve is because of the Lord
* All opulences are due to Him alone
* Causeless mercy
- this is all because of the causeless mercy of Guru and Krishna
- we don't have anything, only the mercy of Guru
* Prosperity from one's personal endeavor is also because of the Lord's grace
* Kaliyuga
- ppl spend money for material things, but not for spiritual things
- Krishna is the ultimate sanctioner, He is the ultimate cause for everything
* Krishna is the Supreme Controller, this Vrajendra kumara!
* Always our aspiration should be to become a spec of dust at the lotus feet of Vaisnavas.
* Grateful starts with a G, 6 G's we have to be grateful to:
- Gurudev
- Goswamis
- Giridhari
- Gauranga
- Gandharvika
-
* SP comments: the conclusion is that God's sanction is the immediate cause for all happenings, good or bad. Any successful man should feel grateful to the Lord for all he has achieved.
* Time won't stop, 2010 came, just wished everyone a new year, already Feb has come in, so we need to step up our japa. Becoming serious is utmost important!
